Toni (Sarah Engels) is actually a theater actress. But after her partner died, the young woman has to take care of daughter Matti (Yuna Bennett) alone. While she keeps the family afloat with occasional jobs, her father-in-law Piet (Lutz Blochberger) takes care of the little one. When Toni gets up and goes to a casting, Piet gets a visit from Tom (Christopher Patten). He is a debt collector - and apparently Matti's father stood in the chalk before his death in some dodgy figures. However, Tom is not happy with his existence as a gangster. However, that should change soon, because Toni and Matti put his life on the head.

Pretty much everyone who has seen more than one film in life should be clear in which direction the story runs as soon as Toni and Tom (as the film is called in Austria) see for the first time.Although it is not a "love at first glance" moment, you shouldn't expect big surprises in the script.

That's a shame because there are occasional exciting approaches. So the play in which Toni plays seems to reflect on her life story. But while other films that use this stylistic device, such as "Birdman" or, to stay with the musical, "Moulin Rouge", skilfully interweave theater and actual action, it remains only a marginal note with "The dancer and the gangsters", withoutthat the script deepens this idea.

The same applies to the supposedly surprising turns.Especially in the first half, one often wonders why certain things happen or where figures have their knowledge from. Some of them are later explained in a dialogue - up to this point the spectators have forgotten that this was important, which is why the reaction will probably be a shrug than a surprised face.

In general, the film seems to have done too much. The story of Tom, Toni's struggle at the theater, its relationship-some film makers: inside turn the fabric three films. And even if an ambitious work is commendable, none of these story approaches have enough air in the 90 minutes to develop sensibly.

This is mainly due to the script, not necessarily due to the actors. The supportive cast around the main actor Christopher Patten does his job without inspiring. But of course the main focus is on Sarah Engels. It is visible at home in the singing and dance sequences, even if the handful of songs do not go beyond the status as a nice pop ballads. If it then becomes dramatic or she is supposed to show great emotions, they are to look at it, but she really does the audience: not inside. For a debut, the performance is okay.

What really pulls down the film is the technology. The optics are uninspired even for a TV production.Only the scenes that play in the foyer of the "Theater des Westens" have a character. The rest of the absolute clichés under.A place where bad guys meet?A smoky pub!Where does the thoughtful thug type live?In a concrete block without personality! However, when cutting, the strangest things stand out.

So Toni takes an old sweater out of a box at one point.Instead of showing how she smells on it, puts on it and is suggested that she thinks of her partner, there is simply a cut, she is sitting in the same position with the garment and leafing off in a book.Various scene transitions are so abrupt that some figures are suddenly somewhere else, without spectators: the information inside has received why they are now there.

"The dancer and the gangster" is not a abysmal film - just a little boring. It is a shallow TV entertainment, during which you can safely look at the cell phone without missing anything, since some of the exciting ideas were not thought to.
