"Squid Game" has only been available on Netflix for a few days, but is already preparing to become the most successful of its own streaming products -to become a service at all. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos at least speculated this week that the show could even overtake Bridgerton. Of course, many fans are now wondering if there will be a second season soon.

The rather perfidious basic idea obviously fascinates an audience of millions: In the series, hundreds of people who are on the brink of subsistence get the chance to win prize money in the millions. They take part in competitions that are based on children's games. Either they win big - or they get killed.

At least so far, Netflix has not commissioned any new episodes, as is often the case, a sequel depends on several factors. Now "Squid Game" creator Hwang Dong-hyuk expressed himself in an interview with "The Korea Times" – apparently he is ambivalent about the topic.

"Squid Game" creator comments on Netflix plans

Hwang Dong-hyuk not only developed the concept of the Netflix hit, but was also responsible for the script and direction of season one. Apparently all of this has left its mark and so Hwang Dong-hyuk is skeptical at first when asked about a potential second season:

"When I was directing, writing and directing the show on my own, it was mentally and physically too much... so I'm worried if we did a second season, would I be able to do it all myself? ""Squid Game" is number one in the Netflix charts this week. Photo: Youngkyu Park/ Netflix

He has already told many people that a second season can at least be produced "not immediately", he wants a cancellation but then not readily grant a sequel. He adds, "With so many people loving the show, I don't think I can say I won't." So the fans can be optimistic – maybe Netflix will draw consequences and simply provide Hwang Dong-hyuk with personnel support for season two.

"Squid Game" was in the planning for a long time

In the interview, the director and writer also revealed that he had the idea for the series a long time ago, but now is probably the right time for "Squid Game " has come. The concept came about in 2008, and a year later Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote the script. As he himself believes, the format is simply too "bizarre" and therefore only saw the light of day with a streaming provider after a decade of development.

"After about 12 years, the world has developed into a place where such strange, violent survival stories are actually welcome," says the 50-year-old confidently. And further: "People felt how relevant the series is to real life. Unfortunately, the world has changed in this direction. The games in the series, which drive the participants crazy, are in line with people's desire to win the jackpot with Cracking things like cryptocurrency, real estate, and stocks. So many could relate to the story."
