Hot Honey: Healthy for the gut and metabolism

Have you ever heard of "Hot Honey"? No, we don't mean hot milk with honey - although that's also one of grandmother's household remedies. No, "hot" doesn't refer to the heat this time, but to the sharpness!

Honey and chili alone are that healthy

The natural product honey is already very healthy anyway. It is full of nutrients, especially vitamins B and C, has antioxidants for cell protection and is therefore antibacterial and anti-inflammatory and has a lot of calcium and potassium.

Hardly anything healthier, right? Well yes! And this is where the chili pepper comes in. Chili is so hot because it contains capsaicin. This, in turn, is not only responsible for bringing tears to our eyes after drinking, but also acts as a natural brake on cravings. Because capsaicin has a positive effect on the blood sugar level, which is therefore subject to fewer fluctuations.

At the same time, the capsaicin heats us up tremendously. This heat formation in the body, the so-called thermogenesis, in turn boosts our metabolism. And that in turn ensures that we really burn fat. More info? That's why chili is so hot and healthy!

Combination of honey and chili for digestion

And the honey, in combination with the chilli, regulates our cholesterol level. The combination lowers the harmful LDL cholesterol. This makes Hot Honey a natural remedy for high blood lipid levels.

But the combination of oligosaccharides, the multiple sugars, from honey and chili is also good for the intestines. Oligosaccharides help our intestines as so-called prebiotics, which means they promote bacterial growth - i.e. that of the good intestinal bacteria that we need to live. After a course of antibiotics, for example, or after diarrhea, hot honey in tea can help to rebuild the intestinal flora.

Here's how it works: Make Hot Honey yourself

There are two ways to mix your Hot Honey: The simple version only needs honey and dried chilli flakes: Take a jar of honey and stir about 2-3 teaspoons of chilli flakes into the sweet mixture, if you like. But be careful: the chili flakes will gradually release their spiciness to the honey.

You can control the spiciness a little better with this recipe. For this you need a 500 g jar of honey and 4-6 chillies. You can use fresh or dried red chillies or, for example, habaneros - with their 250,000 to 300,000 Scoville units, they are much hotter than red chillies, so be careful with them! That's how it works:

  1. Heat the honey very slowly in a saucepan on a low heat - do not boil! You want to keep the nutrients.
  2. Put the chillies in the pot either whole (dried) or halved lengthways (fresh) and let everything simmer for about five minutes over low heat.
  3. Take the pot off the stove and let everything cool down.
  4. Remove the chillies from the cooled honey and pour the hot honey into a clean, preferably previously boiled and dried glass.

And which honey should it be? Natural goods are best - but look, Stiftung Warentest has tested honey.

It is best not to heat the very healthy Manuka honey too much, so as not to destroy the valuable ingredients of the rather expensive honey. It is better to use the chilli flakes variant here or let the chili peppers soak in honey for two to three days. But then use it up quickly!

Incidentally, chili honey can also be bought ready-prepared in a jar. But now you know two recipes that you can try. Enjoy the hot honey and do something good for your digestion!
