Harry Potter Characters: The Students

The students play an important role in the magical franchise, so let's start our listing with them .

House of Gryffindor

Since all three main characters are Gryffindor, viewers may be most familiar with the Hogwarts house.

Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe)

He's "the boy who lived", the chosen one, the titular hero, he's Harry Potter. For seven books and eight films, he met his adversary Voldemort again and again, only to ultimately defeat him in an all-important battle. After his turbulent school days, Harry fulfilled his dream and became an Auror. He can also count himself lucky in his private life, he has three children with his wife Ginny: James, Albus Severus and Lily Luna.

Daniel Radcliffe had said goodbye to the role of Harry after ten years. However, the end of the franchise did not mark the end of his career. In addition to appearances on London's West End and Broadway in New York City, the Briton can also be seen in front of the camera again and again. He starred in the crazy action-comedy Guns Akimbo, as well as the comedy series Miracle Workers (stream all three seasons on Sky Ticket)

Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint)

Much more than just a sidekick, Ron Weasley is Harry Potter's first and longest friend. He is best known for his sayings, but also for his insecurity. As the youngest son of the Weasleys, he's always been overshadowed by his brothers, but throughout the movies (and the books) he's proven time and time again that he's a true hero. After professing his love for Hermione in the final battle against Voldemort, the two marry and have two children: Rose and Hugo. Ron also works as an Auror.

Harry Potter may have started it all, but Rupert Grint's career is far from over. He occupies the screens above all in series. He has starred in Sick Note and Snatch, a spin-off of the film of the same name. If you can't get enough of the one-time Harry Potter star, stream M. Night Shyamalan's Servant on Apple TV+.

Hermione Granger (Emma Watson)

Hermione is not only the reason but also the brain of the trio consisting of her, Ron and Harry. Having grown up in the muggle world like Harry, she wanted to prepare as best she could for the wizarding world. For Hermione, that means reading every book on magic and the wizarding world that she can get her hands on. But not only her intelligence distinguishes her, but also her strong sense of justice, which she also transmits to her and Ron's children.

Emma Watson also has a strong sense of justice, having started her work as a UN Goodwill Ambassador for Gender Equality in 2014. However, she did not trade the acting for it. In 2019 she starred alongside Saoirse Ronan, Meryl Streep and Florence Pugh in Little Women.

Neville Longbottom (Matthew Lewis)

Neville has long been dismissed as a scatterbrained side character, but according to the prophecy that leads Voldemort to want to kill Harry, he might as well have been the chosen one. He proves his hero status at the latest in the Battle of Hogwarts when he kills Nagini and thus destroys another Horcrux.

Matthew Lewis is also doing well. He continues to work as an actor and, in addition to a few leading roles in indie films, was also able to get a supporting role in "A Whole Half a Year".

Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright)

From little sister to big heroine. While Ginny was too shy to even speak near Harry at the beginning of the franchise, the youngest of the Weasley family has grown into a brave warrior as the films have progressed. This not only excited fans, but also Harry, which is why the two may be a happy couple even after school.

Bonnie Wright, like many of the cast members in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, made her acting debut. Her career has continued to evolve even after the enchanting franchise. So far, however, Wright has mainly shone in smaller productions. In the comedy "Those Who Wonder" she is back in front of the camera after almost ten years with her "Harry Potter" colleague Christian Coulson, who played a young version of Tom Riddle in the second part.

Fred & George Weasley (James & Oliver Phelps)

The Weasley twins Fred and George provide countless laughs and creative pranks during their time at Hogwarts. In "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" the two finally have enough of Hogwarts - or rather school inquisitor Dolores Umbridge - and leave the school to open their own joke shop in Diagon Alley. Fred is killed in the Battle of Hogwarts, George loses an ear earlier in the fight against Voldemort.

For identical twins James and Oliver Phelps, the first Harry Potter film was also their first real acting job. The two still seem to enjoy their work because they are still in front of the camera together.

House Ravenclaw

As much as the Gryffindors are brave, the Ravenclaws are intelligent.

Luna Lovegood (Evanna Lynch)

The quirky Luna Lovegood makes her debut in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Although she is a nice, intelligent classmate, she mostly spends her time as an outsider, as many people think her crazy because of her eccentric nature. However, thanks to Harry, Ron, Hermione and Dumbledore's army, she makes friends in her fifth year at Hogwarts. After her school education she travels the world and later marries Rolf Scamander, grandson of Newt Scamander, main character in "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them".

For Evanna Lynch, her Harry Potter debut was also her first film role. In the open casting, she was able to prove herself against over 15,000 other girls. In the meantime it has not become completely quiet around the Irish actress, but the really big roles have been cancelled.

Cho Chang (Katie Leung)

In the films, Cho Chang is first introduced in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. We don't learn too much about the character in the fourth part. Cho is a Ravenclaw and likes Harry and Cedrick Diggory. She accompanies the latter to the Yule Ball, since he had already asked her. In the books, fans will learn more about Cho, including how she is a grade above Harry and also how he plays as Seeker for her house Quidditch team. After the two kiss and briefly enter into a relationship, they quickly separate again. According to Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling later married the adult Cho to a Muggle.

Katie Leung, like many of her peers, is still an actress. In "The Foreigner" she played the daughter of Jackie Chan's character. Most recently, she showcased her talent in the thriller comedy Locked Down. The big breakthrough for the Scottish actress is still pending.

House of Hufflepuff

The Hufflepuffs are always treated a bit neglected in the "Harry Potter" films. They have just as good properties as the other houses.

Cedric Diggory (Robert Pattinson)

Cedrick is introduced to film fans in the fourth part of the series as a handsome and all-rounder. He is chosen by the Goblet of Fire for the Triwizard Tournament. What begins as a great honor for the Hufflepuff student ends as a nightmare. Because after he and Harry touch the cup, they end up directly with Voldemort and his Death Eaters. Without even having a chance to fight back, Cedrick is killed by Wormtail.

Most people know Robert Pattinson as a vampire from the "Twilight" movies. However, he had his first commercially successful role in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire". In the meantime, Pattinson has been able to break away from the teen heartthrob image thanks to films like "The Lighthouse" and "Tenet". In 2022 he will appear in "The Batman" as the title character.

House of Slytherin

Hogwarts House has earned its reputation as the "house for evil wizards and witches" because of its founder and probably her best-known student, Tom Riddle. However, Harry Potter's son proved that good people are also made for Slytherin.

Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton)

Aside from Severus Snape, Draco Malfoy was possibly Harry's greatest enemy at Hogwarts for the longest time. Poisoned by his parents' views, the boy made it clear from the start what he thought of poorer families and not purebloods. At the end of the series, however, not much was left of the snooty loudmouth. On the contrary, during the Battle of Hogwarts, he and his family switch sides and help Harry fight Voldemort. Despite what happened, he and Harry never became friends, but their sons became inseparable.

The young Tom Felton already had two major roles before the "Harry Potter" films. He was seen in 1997's A Case for the Borrowers alongside his Potter colleagues Mark Williams (Arthur) and Jim Broadbent (Professor Slughorn). Two years later he played Jodie Foster's son in "Anna and the King". However, even after the popular franchise, he is still active as an actor. Fans can see him on shows like The Flash and Origin.

Gregory Goyle (Josh Herdman)

Goyle doesn't play a huge role in the Harry Potter franchise as one of Malfoy's "bodyguards". While Draco, as the head of the trio, brings the ideas, he and Crabbe act as his fists. What happened to him after the Battle of Hogwarts is not described in either the final film or the final novel. If he survived, he was either sent to Azkaban, or he's living a free man somewhere and may not be friends with Draco anymore.

Josh Herdman may not have faded from the limelight after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, but the actor now prefers to spend his time in the boxing ring. Netflix users can see him in the crime series Marcella.

Vincent Crabbe (Jaime Waylett)

Alongside Goyle, Crabbe has been by Draco's side since freshman year, not least because her parents were all Death Eaters. In the novelization of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Crabbe summons demon fire and dies in the flames. In the movies, the character last appears in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. His absence from the last two films explains the actor's private life.

The reason for Crabbe's demise in the last two films was actor Jamie Waylett's personal problems. He was charged with growing marijuana in 2009 (via Daily Mail). Outside of the franchise, Waylett didn't seem interested in acting, at least he doesn't have any other roles to his credit. In 2012, he was jailed for two years for taking part in the London Riots (via BBC). In recent years, the actor has not appeared in the media.

Hogwarts

At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry and his friends learn all about magic and its uses. We have summarized the most important adults who are at the school for you.

Albus Dumbledore (Richard Harris/Michael Gambon)

He is the most powerful wizard in the entire franchise and the only person the Dark Lord fears. He survived his difficult youth mainly thanks to his best friend Gellart Grindelwald. He was Headmaster of Hogwarts for decades until his death at the hands of Severus Snape. For a long time he searched for the Horcruxes to help Harry fight Voldemort. His favorite jam is raspberry.

Dual Academy Award-nominated actor Richard Harris starred in the first two parts as Albus Dumbledore. He is also known for his performance in Camelot and later roles in films such as Gladiator. After his death on October 25, 2002, Michael Gambon assumed the role of principal.

Gambon impersonated the character to the end of the series. The end of the franchise didn't mean the actor's retirement. He can still be seen in films and series. In 2018, Michael Gambon showcased his acting talents alongside Rowan Atkinson in Johnny English.

Rubeus Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane)

Fans get to know the loving half-giant at the beginning as the guardian of the keys and lands of Hogwarts, in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" Hagrid is also hired as a professor for Care of Magical Creatures. He always stands by Harry, Ron and Hermione, but often puts them in difficult situations due to his fondness for dangerous animals. At the end of the franchise, he learns that he has a half-brother, the giant Grawp. Hagrid survives the Battle of Hogwarts and continues to work at Hogwarts during the first year of Harry's youngest son, Albus.

Robbie Coltrane was no newcomer to the acting business when Harry Potter started. The Scot was in front of the camera for the first time in 1979 and can list many highlights in his career. His international breakthrough came at the latest alongside Pierce Brosnan in the Bond films "GoldenEye" and "The World Is Not Enough". Even before that, however, he caused a stir in Great Britain; in the crime series "Cracker - For All Cases Fitz" he embodied the police psychologist Dr. Edward "Fitz" Fitzgerald. With at his side Geraldine Somerville, who later embodied Harry's mother Lily.

Minerva McGonagall (Maggie Smith)

Minerva may be a strict teacher, but her heart is in the right place. She may not be the most easy-going, and anyone who's up for a joke in her Transfiguration class isn't laughing, but at least she's always fair. Which is why McGonagall is also the best possible successor in running the school after Dumbledore's death.

Two-time Oscar winner Maggie Smith has been in show business for over 50 years. For the "Downton Abbey" star but no reason to stop. At Christmas 2021 she can be seen in the novel adaptation of the same name of "A Boy Called Christmas".

Severus Snape (Alan Rickman)

From Death Eater to Dumbledore's most important man. For the longest time, Snape was considered one of the most nasty villains in the franchise, who loved torturing Harry into potions. However, in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, fans who haven't read the books learn that he had been spying on Voldemort all along and had taken care of Harry through the years because he loved his mother Lily. Before he can tell Harry the whole truth, however, he is killed by Voldemort. However, with the help of Dumbledore's Pensieve, Potter learns the truth.

Comedy, Drama, Action, Fantasy or Sci-Fi Legendary actor Alan Rickman found his way in almost every genre. He always cut a good figure, especially as a villain. This is how he made his big breakthrough in “Die Hard” as the criminal German genius Hans Gruber. However, it is only one of countless roles that will never forget the actor, who died in 2016.

Sybill Trelawney (Emma Thompson)

For many years, Sybill Trelawney was the Divination elective teacher. Since her skills didn't go beyond the repetitive prophecies of death - which in hindsight weren't always wrong - movie fans often didn't understand why Headmaster Dumbledore was so attached to her. In truth, however, she had predicted the most important of all prophecies without even knowing it. Shortly before Harry's (and Neville's) birth, she had predicted at her Hogwarts interview that soon someone would be born with the power to slay the Dark Lord.

Thanks to horn-rimmed glasses and a wispy mane, Emma Thompson is hardly recognizable in the role of Sybill Trelawney, even though the two-time Oscar winner was in front of the camera decades before the "Harry Potter" films and film and series fans with her are quite familiar to her face. The all-round talent continues to inspire as an actress, screenwriter and producer in films such as "Last Christmas", "Late Night: The Show of a Lifetime" and in "Cruella".

The Order of the Phoenix

When the Dark Lord aka Voldemort first attempted to rise to power, Albus Dumbledore founded the Order of the Phoenix. All witches and wizards who wanted to face Voldemort and his Death Eaters and were of legal age could join the association. We have listed the most important members who were not employed at Hogwarts for years.

Sirius Black (Gary Oldman)

Sirius Black's life has not been easy: rejected by his horrid family and wrongly imprisoned in Azkaban for the murder of his best friends Lily and James Potter. But the tide seemed to be turning. After twelve years, he managed to escape in his Animagus form, to seek out his godchild Harry and tell him the truth about his parents' deaths. However, before the two could live together as a family, Sirius was killed by his cousin, Bellatrix.

For almost 40 years, Oscar winner Gary Oldman has inspired countless roles with his versatility. Whether it's drama, action, horror, sci-fi, or comedy, there's no genre where Oldman doesn't excel. Above all, his feeling for different dialects is emphasized again and again. He has already demonstrated this talent in films such as "Mank", "The Darkest Hour" and "The Dark Knight".

Alastor "Mad Eye" Moody (Brendan Gleeson)

In the first fight against Voldemort, Alastor aka Mad Eye already played an important role. As the best Auror of all time, he had hunted down countless Death Eaters and interrogated and imprisoned others after the supposed death of the Dark Lord. However, he paid a heavy price for his commitment, losing an eye, a leg and part of his mind. Despite his paranoia, he was unprepared for the attack of Wormtail and Barty Crouch Jr. in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and was thus imprisoned by the two. At the end of the fourth part, however, he was freed from his magic suitcase and was once again active as a member of the order. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Alastor died at the hands of Voldemort.

Irish actor Brendan Gleeson doesn't easily fit into one genre. He proves his talent in family films like "Paddington 2" as well as in crazy comedies like "See Bruges... and die?" or weird dramas like "On Sunday you're dead". In the seventh Potter film, he gets to play alongside his son Domhnall Gleeson (Bill Weasley). In addition to his own, the actor also likes to work with another family, so he has been in front of the camera several times for the director brothers Martin McDonagh and John Michael McDonagh.

Remus Lupine (David Thewlis)

Remus Lupine was first introduced in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. As a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, he taught Harry how to cast a Patronus. He was a good friend of Harry's father and therefore has a special connection to him. He died at the Battle of Hogwarts alongside his wife, Tonks. They left a son, Ted.

David Thewlis was an unfamiliar face to many fans prior to his appearance in the Harry Potter films. The actor has previously appeared in classics such as "Seven Years in Tibet" and "The Big Lebowski". Fans can already look forward to his role in the next "Avatar" films.

Nymphadora Tonks (Natalia Tena)

Nymphadora Tonks is not only a popular character in the franchise because of her relaxed nature, she also stands out because of her special skills. She can change her appearance without any effort, which of course benefits her as an Auror. Tonks is married to Lupine towards the end of the series and they give birth to a son, Ted aka Teddy. At the Battle of Hogwarts, she is killed by her aunt, Bellatrix Lestrange.

Natalia Tena made her acting debut opposite Hugh Grant in the comedy About a Boy. The Englishwoman with Spanish roots also pursued an exciting career after the popular franchise. She has appeared in Game of Thrones and the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. Tena's next big project is the series "Wolfe".

Molly Weasley (Julie Walters)

She is the mother of the Weasley gang and in a way Harry's mother too. At least she fell in love with him from the moment they first met. However, Molly is not only the nice mom next door, she also has completely different sides. Especially when her children are in danger, nothing can stop her. Which is why she shows no mercy in the fight against Bellatrix Lestrange and kills the Death Eater.

Julie Walters may be known to many for her work in films such as Mamma Mia! The Movie" and "Billy Elliot - I Will Dance". For the latter, she received her second Oscar nomination. Despite the accolades, the actress isn't resting on her laurels. Instead, she was last seen in a remake of "The Secret Garden".

Arthur Weasley (Mark Williams)

Arthur Weasley is the head of the Weasley family, he works at the Ministry of Magic as Head of the Bureau of Investigation and Seizure of Counterfeit Defense Spells and Protective Items. However, his passion is to research objects - especially technology - from the Muggle world and to restore them using small magic. Like his wife, he survives the Battle of Hogwarts.

Like many of his older Harry Potter colleagues, Mark Williams was in front of the camera long before Part 1 of the series. In "101 Dalmatians" he was allowed to embody the henchman of Cruella de Vil (Glenn Close) together with Hugh Laurie. The actor is still in front of the camera long after the Potter films and already has several projects planned for the near future.

The evil characters in "Harry Potter"

As every fan knows, the world of young Harry does not only consist of good witches and wizards, the evil characters also play an important role in the franchise. That's why we introduce you to the most important characters.

Tom Riddle / Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes)

Tom Riddle aka Lord Voldemort is the result of a tragic childhood. His mother, Merope Gaunt, a witch and descendant of Salazar Slytherin, died shortly after he was born, and his father, a wealthy Muggle, had fled before that. Merope had enchanted Tom Senior with a love potion, whereupon he took her to wife and made her pregnant. Without parents, little Tom grew up in an orphanage until Dumbledore took him to Hogwarts.

Fascinated by the wizarding world and driven by hatred for his muggle father, his wickedness became more and more apparent. After leaving school, he continued to focus on honoring the "Slytherin legacy". This is how the Death Eaters and his quest for eternal life came into being. Both attempts to kill Harry Potter failed, the last one was supposed to be the end of Voldemort.

Behind all the make-up it may be hard to spot him, but every film fan may have heard of Ralph Fiennes. Whether it's "Schindler's List," "The English Patient," or "With Umbrella, Charm, and Bowler Hat," the charming Brit and brother of actor Joseph Fiennes ("Handmaid's Tale") was in Part 4 well before his Potter debut familiar face and will continue to be so. Not least because of his performance as M in the "James Bond" films and in his leading role in "The King's Man".

Lucius Malfoy (Jason Isaacs)

Anyone who wondered why Draco was such a terribly mean boy got his answer in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which introduced his father Lucius for the first time. The snooty Death Eater not only bullies all members of the wizarding community he sees under him, but his own son as well. After falling out of favor with Voldemort, he manages to escape with his family after the Battle of Hogwarts.

Jason Isaacs had a number of successful projects prior to his role in the popular franchise. In dramas like "The Patriot" or Michael Bay's "Armageddon - The Last Judgment" you could see the actor before his role as Draco's father. But even long after the "Harry Potter" films, Isaacs doesn't seem to be bored. After a starring role on Star Trek: Discovery, he starred in Season 3 of Sex Education as Michael's brother.

Peter Pettigrew (Timothy Spall)

Peter Pettigrew aka Wormtail was actually a friend of James, Sirius and Lupin and a former member of the Order. Fearing Voldemort, however, he went over to the Death Eaters and ended up betraying all of his old friends. He had told the dark lord where Harry's parents were, whereupon Voldemort killed them. By the end of the franchise, however, he makes up for his betrayal—partially—but pays with his life. When he hesitated for a brief moment and didn't attack Harry, he was eventually killed by Voldemort's extended hand.

Character actor Timothy Spall feels at home both in front of the camera and on stage. The changeable Englishman likes to mimic the sleazy henchman of the villain. He succeeds not only as Wormtail in Harry Potter, but also as Beadle in "Sweeney Todd - The Diabolical Barber of Fleet Street". He was also able to convince the audience with his performances of real personalities. In 2014 he embodied the British painter J.M.W. Turner in the biopic Mr. Turner - Master of Light" and 2010 ex-Prime Minister Winston Churchill in "The King's Speech". In 2022 fans can see him alongside Kristen Stewart in "Spencer".

Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter)

Bellatrix was one of Lord Voldemort's most loyal Death Eaters. After the supposed death of her master, she was imprisoned in Azkaban and was only released in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". She is Sirius Black's cousin and her sisters are Draco's mother, Narcissa, and Tonk's mother, Andromeda. In the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, fans learn that Bellatrix was pregnant by Voldemort. The Death Eater was killed by Molly Weasley at the Battle of Hogwarts.

The twice Oscar-nominated actress is an integral part of the film business. A successful actress well before her Potter debut in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Helena Bonham Carter continues to shine in compelling roles ten years after the franchise. In addition to eccentric roles in films by her ex-partner Tim Burton, she can be seen as Princess Margaret in the hit Netflix series The Crown. She also appeared in the feature-length Sherlock Holmes spin-off Enola Holmes.

The Dursleys (Vernon, Dudley, Petunia)

Vernon Dursley is Harry Potter's muggle uncle. Similar to his wife Petunia, he harbors a strong dislike for wizards, witches and anything related to the strange world. He's an ordinary man and seems to be happy with his ordinary life, only a thorn in his side is his nephew and his abilities.

Richard Griffiths was an important English film and stage actor. Griffiths began his career in the mid-1970s. In addition to the Potter series, the actor could also be admired in films such as "The Naked Gun 2 1/2", "Sleepy Hollow" and in a supporting role in "Everything a Matter of Time". Richard Griffiths died in 2013 from complications from heart surgery.

Petunia Dursley has little in common with her sister Lily Potter. Being a muggle, she was jealous of her sister's abilities as a child and even once asked Dumbledore to be admitted to Hogwarts too. The envy later developed into hatred, which is why she treated her nephew so badly. In the last book in the series, however, Petunia shows true emotions for the first time, making Harry realize that she cares about him and that she mourns the death of her sister.

Hard to believe these stars almost ended up in the franchise:

Fiona Shaw continues to enjoy a successful career as an actress. The Irishwoman is a familiar face both in her homeland and in Hollywood. Shortly after her time on Harry Potter, she landed a role in the vampire series True Blood. Shaw has recently starred as strict Miss Harrison in the Netflix film Enola Holmes and as a badass agent in Killing Eve.

Dudley Dursley had seen the biggest change of the Dursleys. At the beginning of the franchise, he is a spoiled brat who is mean to Harry. As a teenager, he becomes a thug who is feared by his classmates. But when "Big D" is attacked by a Dementor, everything changes. He appreciates his cousin Harry and even ends up asking him to elope with them.

Harry Melling doesn't have much in common with his former role. The actor has lost a few pounds and is almost unrecognizable in his new, more challenging roles. Whether it's action films like The Old Guard, drama series like The Queen's Gambit, or his shocking supporting role in The Devil All the Time, Melling adapts to each of his roles perfectly.
