DirTea: What's in it and how (un)healthy is the iced tea?

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of rap and hip hop? Maybe rhythmic sounds, hard words or big cars? Iced tea probably didn't cross your mind. And yet rap and iced tea seem to go well together. At least when you look at three rappers who each launched their own iced tea this year. So there are now "Bratee" by Capital Bra, "HafTea" by Haftbefehl and "DirTea" by rapper Shirin David on supermarket shelves. We took a closer look at the latter: What is in DirTea and how healthy or unhealthy is it?

"DirTea" by Shirin David: That's in it

The pastel pink and blue tones of the "DirTea" tins are reminiscent of edible paper, French macarons or sweet bags. And indeed, the packaging reflects the content, because "DirTea" is one thing above all: sweet. After water, sugar is the main ingredient in iced tea. This is followed by fruit juice from fruit juice concentrate, acidifier, acidity regulator trisodium citrate and aroma, depending on the flavor. Oh, and there is also some tea extract in the iced teas.

The three flavors WetPeach (peach), Candy Shop (cotton candy) and Busty Blueberry (blueberry), each available in 500 ml cans, come to 160 to 180 calories per can. The sugar content is a whopping 38 to 43 grams.

Less tea, more sugar water

The amount of sugar in the "DirTeas" is really remarkable. With around 40 grams per can, the 50 grams per day recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) have almost been reached. In most cases, however, there are numerous other sources of sugar each day. Too much sugar increases the risk of obesity and diabetes. In this context, people are warned about soft drinks and cola.

"DirTea" is also more sugar water than tea. Although the whole thing is called ice tea, it contains just 0.1 to 0.24 percent tea extract, depending on the variety.

Conclusion on "DirTea"

DirTea is all about one thing: empty calories. This means that the drink provides energy, but contains little or no vital substances such as vitamins and minerals. The sugar content can quench the hyper craving for sweets in the short term. But at the same time it sends the blood sugar up and down, which in turn means that the next cravings will probably not be long in coming.

Instead of constantly reaching for soft drinks, cola or ready-made iced tea with a high sugar content, make your own lemonade or iced tea. In this way you can regulate the sugar content yourself or use sugar alternatives. You can also be sure that there are no additional flavors or other additives.
