Die Antwort aus dem Mainzer Labor: Mit der Impfung muss der genetische Bauplan der zu bekämpfenden Tumorzelle in den Körper gelangen. Mit diesem "Fahndungsfoto" soll es dem Körper gelingen, die Krebszellen zu erkennen und unschädlich zu machen. Die notwendige Information wird mit der sogenannten mRNA-Technologie transportiert: mit der "Boten-Ribonukleinsäure".
Damit die empfindliche mRNA unbeschadet ihr Ziel im Körper erreicht und von den Zellen des Immunsystems aufgenommen werden kann, muss sie sicher verpackt werden. Das geschieht mithilfe von Fetten, sogenannter Lipiden. Zu diesem Vorgang erscheint am 2. Juni 2016 in der Fachzeitschrift "Nature" ein Artikel.
Versatile technology
Die Publikation kann schon erste Erfolge vorweisen: Bei drei Probanden mit schwarzem Hautkrebs hat die Impfung auf mRNA-Basis das Tumorwachstum stoppen können. Bislang hat die neue Immuntherapie die bisherigen Krebsbehandlungen allerdings nicht ersetzt. Die Zukunft liegt wohl im individuellen Zusammenspiel aller Therapieformen.
Die mRNA-Technologie jedoch wird auch in anderen Bereichen erfolgreich eingesetzt: bei Impfstoffen gegen Corona. Hier ist der genetische Bauplan des SARS-CoV-2-Virus als Informationsträger für das menschliche Immunsystem im Einsatz.
