Google discontinues feature: What users need to know now

Tobias Stadler

Google is scrapping one of its services. Users have until September 30, 2021 to export their bookmarks to "Bookmarks".

With Bookmarks, Google is discontinuing a very old service. Today it is only known to a few users, which is probably the reason why it is now being scrapped. Incidentally, Google Bookmarks has nothing to do with the function of the same name in Chrome. The bookmarks are not affected by the changes.

Google discontinues feature: What users now need to know

Google Bookmarks is, as the name suggests, a service that allows you to save bookmarks. It has been around since 2005. It offered outstanding functions for the time. It was already cloud-based back then and there was the option of adding notes to individual bookmarks.

Google Bookmarks: Service ran for almost 16 years

In the meantime, however, the service is more or less superfluous, since there are comparable functions in every browser. Users of the service have until September 30 to export their bookmarks. The service will then be switched off after almost 16 years.

Anyone who currently logs into Bookmarks may be surprised to find some entries there. Apparently, Google has synchronized places that have been marked with a star in Google Maps with Google Bookmarks. The reasons for this are not known. As "Android Police" reports, Google has now confirmed that the deactivation of bookmarks will not have any effect on maps.

If you want to know which services Google has since buried, you will find them here.
