Fire Force Mangaka Responds to Fanservice Criticism

Atsushi Ookubo, creator of the series »Fire Force« (jap.: »Enn Enn no Shouboutai«), seems to be often confronted with criticism about the fanservice content in his work. In one of the last chapters of the manga, he indirectly addresses these allegations and hostilities.

»I don't need your comments«

The character Tamaki and the fact that he regularly exposes himself intentionally or unintentionally is particularly critical. In chapter 281 of the manga, the author indirectly lets Tamaki speak for herself by responding to a woman who antagonizes her for her promiscuity.

Fire Force mangaka reacts to Fanservice Criticism

The woman berates Tamaki for being vulgar and asks if she wouldn't be embarrassed to undress in front of children, to which she replies, "I don't need your comments on anything I do, so just shut up." Continuing the woman criticizes that Tamaki can only be naked or revealing and that it is unfair if only curvy women are praised for their bodies, whereupon her son also intervenes: "But mom, that doesn't make any sense."

"If this girl is to be considerate of everyone just because she's good-looking, then everyone should be considerate of everyone else just because they're better at something?" he continued. When the woman says that others have earned her skills, the boy says that Tamaki has also worked hard to get her looks and that you can see that well.

After the mother hits her son in a rage, he only says: "Even if you use violence, you can only fight your frustration if you work on yourself and not by forcing your opinion on others." The woman draws attention to what her son comments: »She was just a background character who couldn't think for herself. Her role was exhausted. I, on the other hand, can decide for myself.«

The manga »Fire Force« has been published in Japan since September 2015 and has reached 30 volumes so far. A German publication is made by the publishing house TOKYOPOP, which has brought 24 volumes to the market so far. The anime adaptation is published by peppermint anime.
