According to all information, Avatar 2 will already be the first of four sequels to surpass the first by far. A tank with a capacity of four million liters was specially built for the filming of the sequel, which was moved to the water kingdom. The actors got diving certificates. Actress Sigourney Weaver, 72, finally managed to hold her breath for six minutes. This was necessary so that no air bubbles later disturbed the CGI backgrounds.

Backgrounds like this sound like the excesses of legendary filming like those for Apocalypse Now or Heavens Gate. For Cameron himself, it's not about unworldly megalomania, but passion: "I'm dealing with the ocean when I'm not making films," he told Entertainment Weekly. "Why shouldn't I combine my two great loves?"

His passion seems to drive the effort of all four sequels to unimaginable heights: While Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 are still set on tropical beaches, which Cameron describes as "Bora Bora on steroids", Avatar 4 and 5 namely quite obviously in every respect to new shores. He's right: Even before the film industry was completely turned upside down by the pandemic, the streaming market was becoming a strong competitor for cinemas. A lot has happened since Avatar hit the big screen in 2009.
