Sustainable glasses: five glasses labels with style and view

The glasses industry has also recognized that it has to rely on more environmentally friendly materials. In the frames, glasses wearers already have the choice of numerous alternative materials. As far as sustainable glasses are concerned, a Cologne start-up now wants to start with an innovative combination.

The demand for fair and compatible products is increasing - and even with glasses, the development does not stop at.Luckily!Whether from up-cycled, recycled or organic materials: instead of plastic frames.

The glasses themselves, on the other hand, are still mostly made of plastic. But maybe not for long: The Cologne start-up nature specs at least wants to go one step further and the first German optician who uses sustainable materials not only in the frames, but also with the glasses-and so combined both.

Crowdfunding for better glasses

That would indeed be a novelty - and a relief for the environment.According to Nature Specs, around 33 million plastic glasses are produced annually in Germany, which corresponds to 214 tons of plastic. That is too much, the founders Carl Philipp, Paulina, Lars and Lorina and decided to bring really sustainable glasses to the market with their start-up.

Therefore - instead of acetate, chemical adhesives and plasticizers - wooden remains from the furniture industry and old fishing nets from the ocean are used. The glasses are made of biomass that does not consist of petroleum, but of up to 90 % plant materials.According to the start-up, this not only saves 82 % plastic, but also 14 % greenhouse gases.

In order to implement your idea and build your own online shop, Nature Specs is currently focusing on a crowdfunding campaign that is only running for a few days.Around 4 still missing.000 euros - we keep our fingers crossed!

Why are glasses not sustainable?

As I said, most glasses are made of plastic - both the versions and the glasses.Various chemicals, plasticizers and colors (for the frames) are used in the production. For these reasons, a sensible glasses recycling is hardly possible.

Once the glasses have done its job, it usually ends up in the (residual) garbage. Not many people know that you can also donate glasses. The accessories can also rarely score in terms of environmental friendliness: polyamides and polyester are often processed in glasses cleaning cloths, and etuis are usually made of plastic.

It's a good thing that there are already companies that no longer play!We do not want to withhold a small - but very fine selection - of opticians that already offer more sustainable glasses.

Better glasses with a clear view

View from the Württemberg Winnenden is a mecca for everyone who has looked at the plastic frame and are looking for more sustainable alternatives. The versions of view consist of cork, sea grass, incorporated flowers (yes, flowers!), Stone, cotton, titanium or wood.Special upcycling highlight: glasses made of old vinyl plates such as this AC/DC model. This is music in our eyes.

The Leipzig company ST.Rowing has its products produced in a small manufactory in Rathenow under fair conditions. The versions consist of Italian cellulose acetate, a vegetable material that consists of wood waste, plant residues or cotton fibers and resembles plastic.Cellulose is collected by acetic acid, poured into panels and processed further.

But not only the versions are "made in Germany", but also the glasses: St works here.Rowing with the Rathenow manufacturer Ophthalmica, which relies on sustainable glass production.

Dick Moby-organic glasses from Holland

We travel with Dick Moby.Literally, because the models of the Dutch company are named after cities: from Miami it goes to Buenos Aires and from there to Düsseldorf. The versions of their black models consist of 97 % recycled acetate from the glasses industry and 3 % of black ink.In the metal models (a model can be seen above), the founders Tim and Robbert also use recycled material, and organic acetate is used for the colorful designs without toxic plasticizers.Nice plus: The glasses cleaning cloths are also made from old PET bottles.

Sea2see

The name already reveals - with this manufacturer it goes out into the vastness of the sea. From the fish François van den Abelle fishing nets and plastic waste and turns them into high -quality glasses for its Sea2 Sea brand.Every day, the company claims to collect around one ton of plastic waste from the oceans-so it is not surprising that the company has both a cradle-to-cradle-as well as a PETA certification on the wall. And Javier Bardem could get on board (yes, that was intentional).

Sustainable glasses cleaning cloths

Incidentally, did you know that there are not only "greener" glasses, but of course also more sustainable glasses cleaning cloths?Conventional cleaning cloths, as you can get them from the optician, mostly consist of microfiber and thus made of polyester and/or polyamide. Both are plastics that are obtained from oil. They also release microplastics.

You drive better (and the environment!) With a cleaning cloth made of organic cotton, which is also suitable as a valuable gift. For example, the glasses cleaning cloth from Fazzettel (in the picture) is interweaved in Austria and consists only of cotton.
