Puhdys keyboardist: Peter "hung" Meyer is 80

Berlin (dpa) - "hung."So he reports when his phone rings.And with this name he introduces himself when you shake his hand at a meeting."I'm almost 100.And for 90 years I have been going to "hung" on the phone, says Peter Meyer with the humor typical of him, who often has small exaggerations.

He has lived in the house since 1978.A few more ex-Puhdys musicians also live in the neighborhood.Meyer has his office in the attic, effortless he comes up the stairs.His room is a mixture of work space and warehouse.Keyboards are there, boxes with magazines and suitcases, newspaper articles hang on the walls.He lives in the house together with the woman with whom he has been with for more than 40 years - but not married.

Meyer was born in Hohenmölsen in today's Saxony-Anhalt.As a nine -year -old, he received his first accordion, including lessons.First, Meyer worked as a music teacher, since 1963 as a professional musician.At the Puhdys he has been on stage since the first official concert in November 1969.He played keyboard and saxophone in the band - first to cover hits in English, later to his own German texts such as "Alt like a tree".

"With his peculiar humor, he provided the" inner "entertainment in the Puhdys," it says on his homepage.Its typical hairstyle for decades: completely free forehead, but all around long thin hair.From the vocational school, his nickname "hung", which he had received in the boarding school.

The Puhdys were the most successful rock band of the GDR.Unlike most other well-known GDR musicians, the quintet around front man Dieter Birr filled big halls shortly after the turn.When the Puhdys dissolved after a big farewell tour in 2016, Meyer was already 76 years old.

He would have liked to continue, he says."We were a band and could live on it - and not even bad.Nowadays it is usually different.".But in recent years there has been between Birr and the other musicians, who finally led to the end of the Puhdys.But he had 80.Birthday a big wish: "That the Puhdys are on stage again together."
