Milk alternatives have meanwhile gained a permanent place on the supermarket shelf. While a few years ago soy milk was one of the plant-based alternatives to classic cow's milk, today you can find products made from almonds, oats, coconut, spelled or even peas. For a few months now there has been a new star in the milk alternative sky: pistachio milk.
The vegan nut milk is only available in the USA so far, but it is very easy to make yourself. We reveal how it works and what makes pistachio milk special.
Pistachio milk: The new nutty milk alternative
After almond, oat and pea milk, the newest milk alternative is called pistachio milk. Due to its high content of (healthy) fats, it is particularly easy to froth and compared to almond milk it is said to be even more environmentally friendly. Pistachio trees need far less water. It should also convince with a mild taste that goes well with a coffee.
The lactose-free, gluten-free and vegan milk alternative also contains valuable vitamins and other nutrients that the nut brings with it.

Healthy and nutritious: That's what pistachio milk can do
Pistachios are considered very healthy. They are rich in healthy unsaturated fatty acids, which have a positive effect on cholesterol levels, among other things. The dietary fibers it contains have a satiating effect, prevent cravings and support digestion. And then there is a whole package of vitamins and minerals.
For example, pistachios contain a lot of vitamin B6, which plays an important role in blood formation, lipid metabolism and the immune system, among other things. Their potassium content, which is important for our cells, muscles and heart, is also convincing.
Of course, pistachio milk also contains the valuable nutrients of the nut. However, since the milk alternative does not contain all of the pulp, the nutritional values per 100 grams are lower - especially when it comes to fiber.
Recipe: How to make pistachio milk yourself
Pistachio milk is easy to make yourself. All you need is a good blender and a fine strainer or nut milk bag.
How to do it:
- Soak the pistachio nuts in water for about four hours or overnight. Then drain the water and rinse the seeds.
- Place the pistachio nuts in a blender with 1 liter of water and puree until no more pieces can be seen.
- Season to taste with dates, maple syrup, vanilla and/or cinnamon.
- Finally, strain the milk through a fine sieve or nut milk bag to remove the pulp.
Store the homemade pistachio milk in the refrigerator. Here it can be kept for about 3-4 days. And try it with homemade almond milk.
Conclusion on pistachio milk
Pistachio milk easily joins the list of plant-based milk alternatives - in terms of consistency, taste, nutrients and sustainability. Since the nut milk is not yet commercially available in this country, you have to make it yourself. But that's pretty easy.
The only downside: Pistachios, and therefore also pistachio milk, are relatively expensive.
