No lipstick tested by Stiftung Warentest was free of harmful substances

In its test, Stiftung Warentest tested the content of critical substances. Frightening result: No product can do without critical substances - not even natural cosmetics. We present the test results and show you products that performed best in the test comparison and contained relatively little titanium dioxide.

This is how the Stiftung Warentest test

In the "test" issue (11/2021), Stiftung Warentest tested a total of 17 lipsticks in the reddish-brown shade of rosewood. The test candidates included various products from expensive, cheap and natural cosmetic brands. Among other things, the cosmetic properties of the lipsticks, the application, the critical substances, the user-friendliness of the packaging, the declaration and the heat and cold resistance were evaluated.

Special feature: In May 2021, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) announced due to a re-evaluation of the color pigment titanium dioxide that the substance is to be classified as questionable. Titanium dioxide is suspected of having a mutagenic effect. The substance has not yet been banned. The Stiftung Warentest criticizes its appearance and that of other mineral oil-like substances. This also led to the special procedure: Stiftung Warentest only completely tested the lipsticks that did not fall out of the race due to the knock-out criterion in the initial inspection due to critical substances.

Lipsticks in the test: every product contains critical substances

In the lipstick test by Stiftung Warentest, none of the products received an overall rating of "good". 15 lipsticks achieved the "test" quality rating "satisfactory" and two test candidates failed the test with the grade "poor". The reason for the bad result is the contained critical substances that were found in all products. At least one of the critical substances was identified in each lipstick: mineral oil components and mosh-like synthetic hydrocarbons and/or titanium dioxide.

The Stiftung Warentest therefore only recommends a few products to a limited extent. These include, for example, the lipsticks from L'Oréal Paris and Annemarie Börlind , both of which received an overall rating of "satisfactory (2.7)" and thus took first place. The lipstick from Dr. Hauschka in the color Camelia 03 is one of the limited recommendations. It received the "test" quality rating "satisfactory (2.8)" from the testers.

A price tip that ended up just behind the test winners is the All in One Lipstick from Manhattan . The testers gave it an overall rating of "satisfactory (2.8)".

The cheap test winner: L'Oréal Paris lipstick

The test result: One first place in the lipstick test goes to the lipstick from L'Oréal Paris with the overall grade "satisfactory (2.7)". It has "good" cosmetic properties and is also "good" to use. The resistance to heat and cold was even rated as "very good (1.0)". However, the product contains titanium dioxide and other critical substances in small to medium amounts.

Product details: The intense lipstick in Color Rich 133 Rosewood Nonchalant is enriched with argan oil and vitamin E. According to the manufacturer, the formula with beeswax should last up to twelve hours and provide the lips with sufficient moisture over this period. The lipstick of the well-known brand is available in various colors.

The premium test winner: Annemarie Börlind Natural Beauty Lipstick

The test result: The other first place goes to Annemarie Börlind's Natural Beauty lipstick. It also received the overall grade "satisfactory (2.7)" and was able to perform better in terms of critical substances. Besides titanium dioxide, no other substances could be detected. The application and the cosmetic properties were each rated as "good".

Product details: Mineral pigments ensure natural colors in this lipstick. The product gets its nourishing properties from the ingredients organic shea butter, organic jojoba oil and cocoa butter. They effectively protect the lips from drying out. The lipstick is also gluten-free and contains no animal extracts. In addition to the color Rosewood 74, there are many other trendy colors such as berry, red and nude to choose from. The lipstick is the winner of the "Elle International Beauty Award 2021" in the Green Make-up category.

Certified natural cosmetics: Dr. Hauschka Lipstick

The test result: The lipstick from Dr. Hauschka received the "test" quality rating of "satisfactory (2.8)". In terms of the content of critical substances, the product is almost on a par with Annemarie Börlind's test-winning lipstick. The testers could not detect mosh, similar substances or heavy metals. It contains titanium dioxide. However, the testers rated the firmness of the contours and the opacity as "good".

Product details: The lipstick in the color Camellia 03 by Dr. Hauschka ensures a precise result. The rich composition cares with mineral pigments and medicinal plant extracts, especially from rose and rosehip and with almond oil, apricot kernel oil and carnauba wax. dr Hauschka is a certified natural cosmetics brand. According to the manufacturer, it is free of synthetic fragrances and preservatives as well as mineral oils, silicones and PEG.

The price tip: Manhattan All in One Lipstick

The test result: The All in One Lipstick from Manhattan was given the overall grade "satisfactory (2.8)". Except for the critical substances and packaging categories, the product received a "good" rating in all other categories. However, all named substances from titanium dioxide to heavy metals could be detected in the lipstick.

Product details: The All in One Lipstick by Manhattan ensures sensual lips. At the same time, it also cares for the lips and offers optimal coverage after just one application. The integrated color protection technology ensures long-lasting color intensity. According to the manufacturer, the Manhattan lipstick should care for the lips for 24 hours and prevent them from drying out.

Our conclusion

Stiftung Warentest cannot unreservedly recommend a single lipstick from the test, because the substance titanium dioxide, which has been classified as questionable since this year, and other critical substances brought a devaluation for all lipsticks.

Good make-up properties and comparatively little titanium dioxide can be found in the lipsticks from Annemarie Börlind , L'Oréal Paris and Dr. Hauschka included. They are therefore recommended with restrictions.
